Did you know that the main difference between Alexander Technique and other bodywork classes and therapies is that us AT teachers talk a lot about necks. If your neck is ‘free’ or released it will automatically help you release muscles all through your body.
Try it for yourself now while reading. Notice If you are holding tension in your neck. See if you can consciously release the area. Do you notice other muscles releasing in other parts of your body? Do you notice yourself breathing more easily? You might find your back pain eases up.
If so, you’ve learnt AT in a nutshell! The trick is to keep that feeling going and that’s where an Alexander Teacher can help.
Excitingly, there has been some research done in the last year that proves this mechanism scientifically. It was published in the paper ‘Proactive selective inhibition targeted at the neck muscles: This proximal constraint facilitates learning and regulates global control'. It can be downloaded here .
It's probably not for bedtime reading but this is exciting as it opens the way for more scientific research to be done on the mechanisms behind Alexander Technique principles.
