I had a lovely time with the Bristol Sling Ladies yesterday, working with the attendees to help them think differently about how they carry their babies in a sling.
Who knew there were so many different types of sling! Whatever type you choose, even if it fits correctly, you can still get pain and tension eg. in your shoulders or neck.
There are 3 simple things you can think about while walking with the sling:
1. Think forward and up - It's really easy to imagine that the weight of the baby is pulling us down but it doesn't have to. Imagine a balloon attached to your head, gently flowing in the wind. This will allow your head to lead your walk as it should be.
2. Look where you are going. Sounds straight forward but it's easy to be distracted by the baby or think we need to look at the ground to check our stepping. When you are looking straight ahead you're peripheral vision is naturally used to see the ground.
3. Imagine your baby is part of you, rather than hanging off you. If you do this your body will be in a natural balance rather than overcompensate by leaning back and thus causing discomfort.
