I ask other mums with older children: ‘How do you know when they are ready for the next stage eg. dropping a nap, or weaning?’ and most of them can’t really come up with the answer. Frustrating at first, but then I realised it’s seems to be just down to instinct. It’s something I’ve been working on but it’s a process to learn to trust our own instincts.
At 9 months she was young to drop to one nap a day but she didn’t seem that tired in the morning when I put her down. I was used to her having a nap in the morning and a nap in the afternoon. I resisted the change as I was used to having that extra little break in the afternoon and I was wondering what I would do with her for all those hours before bedtime! When she moved to one nap she did struggle and then I worried I’d done the wrong thing but I just said to myself ‘I trust my instincts – she sleeps well at night and is happy so it must be right’. The afternoons did feel long but the silver lining was getting a 2 hour long break in the middle of the day! We also found more baby groups were available to us as she wasn’t asleep during those times. There is always something good that comes out of changing to the new normal!
