In 2008, a scientific study published in the British Medical Journal found that one-to-one lessons in the Alexander Technique from registered teachers have long-term benefits for patients with chronic lower back pain compared to massage and exercise.
Alexander Technique sessions resulted in an 86% reduction in days of pain (from 21 days to just 3) and a set of just 6 Alexander Technique sessions followed by exercise was 72% as effective as this.
Reducing the need for pain medication
A preliminary evaluation of pain clinic services has been undertaken. Chronic pain sufferers have been given Alexander Technique lessons in NHS outpatient clinics.
The study done so far shows that more than half of the patients in the study stopped or reduced their use of medication after 3 months of lessons. Thus giving cost savings to the NHS. The study continues. Learn more
There is much past and current scientific research being carried out on a variety of different areas. Just two are detailed here.
Based in the UK, the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique supports and publishes the research. Visit STAT for details on all other research.
